2014 UCD Medicine Conferring
The 2014 UCD Medicine Conferring took place at O'Reilly Hall, Belfield on Thursday 5th June 2014 with 200 undergraduate and graduate entry students awarded degrees in Medicine and 54 postgraduate students awarded a range of graduate research degrees.
The annual conferring marks one of the high-points in the School's academic calendar. This year represented among the 254 graduands were a number of School staff who were conferred with MD or PhD degrees as well as the usual number of children of UCD staff who are following their parents into healthcare professions.
The bestowing of the prestigious MB BCh BAO degree, took place under the direction of Dean of Medicine, Prof Patrick Murray and UCD President, Prof Andrew Deeks, presiding over his first UCD Conferring Ceremony.
Distinguished UCD Medicine graduate and HSE Director of Medical Education & Training, Prof Eilis McGovern (UCD Medicine 1978) gave the traditional address to the new graduates offering wise words and encouragement to all as they embark on their career journeys.
Prof McGovern noted the recent outputs of the Strategic Review of Medical Training & Career Structure working group and other initiatives to improve employment conditions for doctors. Recognising the 40 students who were conferred with nursing degrees, Prof McGovern highlighted recent development in this profession including Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and Nurse Prescribers.
Prof McGovern commented,
So I hope you can see that there is a lot of positive news out there, and that you will benefit from these many initiatives. This is so important, because you are the future of our health service – our future nurses, GP’s, specialists and consultants.
People like me, and the other people on the podium – by that I mean old people – are your future patients. We want you to be here to look after us!
UCD President, Professor Deeks noted that,
For me, this is a graduation I will always remember as it is my first as President here at University College Dublin. I joined this very fine institution in January and am deeply privileged to be here to share this great day with you.
The graduates now formally join the ranks of the medical profession whereupon they begin a year's further training as interns, many of these within the UCD Intern Training Network.
