Prof Peter Dervan Memorial Medal for Excellence in Cancer Pathology

UCD Pathology is delighted to announce the establishment of the Peter Dervan Memorial Medal for Excellence in Cancer Pathology.

This medal has been established to recognise the enormous contribution that the late Professor Peter Dervan made to Cancer Pathology here at UCD and internationally.  Peter was an incredible Clinical Pathologist, mentor and role model to all that had the privilege to know him.

The medal will be award competitively to a student in UCD Medicine who has excellence in the area of Cancer Pathology.

Eligibility Criteria

The successful candidate must be available to attend the UCD Medicine Gala Dinner on 5th June 2014 in the O'Reilly Hall UCD where the medal will be awarded in the presence of Professor Dervan’s family.

Selection Process

Direct entry undergraduate medicine students wishing to be considered in the competition are asked to submit their results for two specific modules taken at the identified semesters.

  • ONCOLOGY IMMUNOPATHOLOGY:- Taken in the January to May Semester 2013
  • HAEMATOLOGY AND IMMUNOSUPPRESSION:- Taken in the September-December  Semester 2013

Graduate entry medicine students wishing to be considered in the competition are asked to submit their results for

  • ONCOLOGY IMMUNOPATHOLOGY:- Taken in the January to May Semester 2013
  • HAEMATOLOGY AND IMMUNOSUPPRESSION:- Taken in the September-December  Semester 2012

Results for these two modules should be sent to Ms Aisling O’Keefe by Monday 19th May 2014 by 12 noon with the phrase PROFESSOR PETER DERVAN MEMORIAL MEDAL in the subject/header of the email.  Please also to copy Dr. Amanda McCann into ALL of these correspondences.

Applicant students will be ranked by the averaged for the two modules and the top 4 – 6 students will be invited to present for a Viva Voce to a panel of pathologists in the week beginning Monday 2nd June 2014.  (The exact time date and venue for the viva voce to be confirmed)

Although this is likely to be an extremely competitive process, all interested students are encouraged to apply for the competition.


Prof Peter A Dervan (1945 – 2013)

Prof Peter A Dervan, who died on Nov 10th 2013, was appointed Consultant Pathologist to the Mater (and initially Richmond) Hospitals, Dublin  in 1978  and Professor of Pathology at University College Dublin and the Mater Hospital  in 1991. During his tenure, until his retirement in 2008, he excelled as a histopathologist; he achieved recognition as a leading medical researcher and he was acknowledged as an outstanding and innovative teacher.

In addition to his pre-eminence among pathologists in Ireland, he was also esteemed by his professional colleagues internationally. He was a role model for UCD students who were drawn to the specialty of pathology and he mentored many young professionals in training who themselves went on to distinguished careers.
