Professor of Microbial Diseases
Consultant in Microbiology or Infectious Dieases
St Vincent's University Hospital
In the second of a number of planned clinical professorial positions, the UCD School of Medicine has announced the advertisement of the position of Professor of Microbial Diseases / Consultant in Microbiology or Infectious Diseases. Based at St Vincent’s University Hospital, this new position is expected to build on the University’s extensive expertise in infection, to contribute to academic development within the School and to provide clinical leadership in one of Ireland’s foremost acute hospitals within the country’s largest hospital group.
The Professor of Microbial Diseases will be principally based at St Vincent’s University Hospital, where s/he will be an academic leader working with the other academic and clinical staff to oversee the design, delivery, assessment and quality of programmes for undergraduate and graduate medicine students. As consultant in microbiology or infectious diseases, the appointee will led the delivery of a modern, professional and efficient clinical service focused on patient care.
The candidate will join an extensive community of academic and clinical staff focused on improving patient outcomes that includes academic researchers addressing the fundamentals of infection biology and clinical researchers investigating communicable diseases of national and global significance. Our research spans molecular and clinical characterisation of pathogenic microorganisms and viruses, host response to infection, immunopathologies such as inflammation, and immune system dysfunction.
The University has two highly successful multi-investigator four year thematic PhD programmes in infection biology and computational infection biology (including molecular characterisation of microbial pathogens, viral and infectious disease and host-pathogen interactions). It is the location for the internationally recognised, UCD Centre for Research in Infectious Diseases (CRID) with focused research on the pathogenesis, immunology and epidemiology of a range of infectious agents including HIV, HTLV’s, HCV and other viral agents. These dedicated University facilities are also home to the National Virus Reference Laboratory (NVRL).
As the academic focus is on attracting a high calibre clinician scientist with a strong track record of clinical, translational or fundamental research in infectious diseases, we are pleased to accept applications from either clinical microbiologists or infectious disease consultants and can accommodate either speciality into the vibrant and dynamic community of medical consultants. The full time academic appointment at the UCD School of Medicine will enable the appointee develop an internationally competitive research group and provide expert instruction to medical students during their clinical attachments at St Vincent’s University Hospital.
For further information on this opportunity please see the UCD Human Resources web page (post reference: 007972). The closing date for receipt of applications is 29th January 2016.
