Mark English Qualifies for Rio 2016
Congratulations to Mark English (Medicine, Stage 3) who qualified for the 2016 Olympics by posting a season’s best as he finished fourth in a very strong 800m field at the Anniversary Games Diamond League meeting in London. The Letterkenny man will be pleased to have achieved the Olympic qualifying standard but also to have put a recent injury behind him.
Mark also put recent European U23 Championship disappointment behind him when he posted a time of 1:45:49, finishing behind the world record holder, the 2012 Olympic silver medalist and the 2014 European champion at London's Olympic stadium in Stratford.
Botswana's Nijel Amos avenged his London 2012 Olympic defeat by overtaking David Rushida on the home straight to win in a time of 1:44:57 at the track where Kenyan Rushida recorded his world record time. Poland's Adam Kszczot finished ahead of the young UCD Medicine student in third place.
The UCD Elite Athlete won a bronze medal at the 2014 European Championships and a silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in Prague in March. However the three time Irish champion has struggled with form and injury of late, including a disappointing eighth place finish in the U23 European Championship Final in Tallinn. This performance was just the boast that the Donegal man needs as he faces into the World Championships in Beijing in three weeks time and he counts down to Rio de Janeiro.
