The United Kingdom & Eire Council of Malaysian Students (UKEC) Awarded UCD Malaysian Society the “UKEC Best Malaysian Night 2015 in UK and Ireland”.
On the 5th and 6th of June, a group of 12 students - drawn from across the School of Medicine, School of Public Health and Physiotherapy and the School of Nursing and Midwifery - attended the 5th Annual U21 United Nations Development Goals Workshop, which was hosted by Lund University.
Following a national media campaign in April of this year, Professor Michael Turner, UCD Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Director, UCD Centre for Human Reproduction, Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital was last week invited to make a statement to the Oireachtas Committee on Health on the pregnancy complication of Neural Tube Defects which is a major public health issue of national importance.
A team of UCD Medicine graduates make history by being the first Irish team to take part in the 2015 World Medical Football Championships at Long Beach, California. We profile here the Irish players taking part in this week long World Cup-styled competition which also features 600 physicians from around the world.
Funeral arrangements for the three UCD students who died tragically in Berkeley, California have been confirmed. The Dean of Medicine will attend each of the three separate funerals along with School and University staff. The Dean has re-iterated the student support services which are available to any student who has been affected by this tragedy.

We are all deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic accident in Berkeley, San Francisco yesterday. Six Irish students lost their lives and three were from our own UCD community. We extend our condolences to the families and friends of Niccolai Schuster, 2nd year BA History and Politics, Eimear Walsh and Lorcán Miller, both 3rd year Medicine. We also send our sympathies to the families of Eoghan Culligan, Olivia Burke and Ashley Donohoe.
Professor Bernard Kinane (UCD Medicine 1983), Associate Chief for Education and Director, Paediatric Sleep Programme at Massachusetts General Hospital / Harvard School of Medicine was awarded the title of UCD School of Medicine Honorary Fellow at the 2015 UCD Medicine Gala Dinner. Distinguished UCD alumnus Professor Fergus Shanahan (UCD Medicine 1977) was conferred with a degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa at the 2015 UCD Medicine Conferring which took place on Monday 8th June 2015 at UCD O'Reilly Hall, Belfield. Prof Shanahan is Professor of Medicine in University College Cork and consultant gastroenterologist at Cork University Hospital. In a stellar research career, Prof Shanahan has published more than 470 scientific papers, has been recognised by many institutions nationally and internationally. At UCC, Prof Shanahan has established the multi-disciplinary Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre which has been ranked 2nd in the world in this area of research.

We were delighted to welcome the McCarthy family to the 2015 UCD Medicine Conferring. The McCarthy Clan now includes four successive generations of UCD Medicine graduates comprising Dr Grace Kenny (UCD Medicine 2015), her mother Professor Geraldine McCarthy, her grandfather Dr Donal McCarthy and great grandfather, the late Dr Charles McCarthy.
The 2015 UCD Medicine Conferring took place on Monday 8th June 2015 at UCD O'Reilly Hall, Belfield. The ceremony, led by UCD President Prof Andrew J Deeks, saw 225 undergraduate medicine and 29 nursing students be conferred with Bachelor degrees in Medicine and Nursing. Research degrees were also conferred including 10 masters and 31 doctoral degree awards. An honorary degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa was conferred on Prof Fergus Shanahan (UCD Medicine 1977), Professor of Medicine at University College Cork.
The International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care announce a free one-year membership to undergraduate college/university students of any discipline. Membership is valid for one year only and can be renewed annually at no cost as long as the undergraduate status is maintained and demonstrated.
New research led by Conway Fellow, Professor Catherine Godson, University College Dublin and Professor Kumar Sharma University of California, San Diego shows that a molecule found in the body can protect against developing obesity-related diseases by slowing, and possibly reversing, inflammation.
UCD Radiography Lecturer, Dr Michaela Davis, recently attended a special event at Sir Winston Churchill’s birthplace of Blenheim Palace to mark the 50th anniversary of his living legacy – The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust (WCMT). Dr Davis is herself one of 5,000 people to have been awarded a Travelling Fellowship since the inception of the Trust, 50 years ago.
