Four Generations of UCD Medicine Graduates

Tue, 9 June 15 17:00

Three generations of UCD Medicine Graduates including (from left to right) Professor Geraldine McCarthy (UCD Medicine 1981), Dr Grace Kenny (UCD Medicine 2015) and Dr Donal McCarthy (UCD Medicine 1947, UCD Medicine 1951).

Although we were delighted to see all our students and their families celebrate their degree success, the School was particularly pleased to welcome the McCarthy family to the 2015 UCD Medicine Conferring.  With Dr Grace Kenny's conferring, the McCarthy Clan now include four successive generations of UCD Medicine graduates.

Watching Dr Kenny's conferral with an honours degree of Bachelors of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Obstetrics (MB BCh BAO) were her mother Professor Geraldine McCarthy (UCD Medicine 1981), her father Professor Dermot Kenny and her grandfather, Dr Donal McCarthy (UCD Medicine 1947).  Grace’s great grandfather, the late Dr Charles McCarthy was also a UCD Medicine graduate.

Professor Geraldine McCarthy is a UCD Clinical Professor and consultant rheumatologist at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital where she is Division Head of Rheumatology.  She graduated from UCD School of Medicine in 1981 and following faculty appointments at Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee she returned to Dublin in 2005 taking up an appointment in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.  Prof McCarthy was the first to be appointed as UCD Clinical Professor under the UCD Clinical Pathway in 2009.  She is an internationally recognised expert in calcium crystal-deposition diseases with continuous peer-reviewed extramural research funding since 1990.  She is a member of the UCD Rheumatology group which has been designated as a EULAR Centre of Excellence by the European League Against Rheumatism.  She is married to Professor Dermot Kenny, Professor of Cardiovascular Biology at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Dr Kenny’s grandfather, Dr Donal McCarthy graduated from UCD School of Medicine in 1947 and completed a doctor of medicine (MD) degree in 1951.  Now retired, Dr McCarthy had a distinguished career in community medicine and was the Laois County Physician based in Portlaoise.  Donal’s father, the late Dr Charles McCarthy, also a UCD Medicine graduate was consultant gastero-intestinal surgeon at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital making Grace the fourth successive generation of the McCarthy family to graduate from UCD Medicine.

Although four generations is rare, a number of the graduating class include children of current or recent staff of this School and other Irish Medical Schools.  In contrast, some of our graduates are the first in their families to attain third level education or to embark upon a career in Medicine.  Be they family trailblazers or the next generation in a growing Medicine dynasty, each student has their own personal achievement making our conferring days ones of great celebration for all.
