The Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Mr Lim Guan Eng has officially opened the Penang Medical College (PMC), Clinical Skills and Education Centre in Seberang Jaya Hospital.
Our congratulations to UCD Conway PhD students, Andrew Selfridge and Conor Kerley who took first and second poster prizes respectively at the Molecular Medicine Ireland Annual Scientific Meeting. Run as part of the trans-institutional Clinical & Translational Research Scholars Programme, the meeting attracted over 100 researchers from across the participating Universities.
UCD Researcher to Deliver Prestigious Cournand Lecture at European Respiratory Society’s International Congress
Dr Silke Ryan, a UCD Medicine researcher at SVUH, will deliver the prestigious Cournand lecture, to an expected audience of 20,000, at the forthcoming international congress of the European Respiratory Society (ERS). The ERS Congress, the largest annual respiratory meeting in the world, takes place this year in Amsterdam, the Netherlands from 26-29th September.
As part of our ‘Care in Medicine’ initiative, final year UCD Medicine students participated in a seminar entitled ‘Should we be more Caring?’ in the FitzGerald Chamber on March 6th 2015. Coordinated by Prof Brendan Drumm and Dr Suzanne Donnelly, the event afforded students the opportunity to discuss and reflect upon the challenges and rewards of empathic care in the daily practice of medicine.
The St Patrick's Day Festival kicks off this weekend with the annual Colours Boat Race between UCD and Trinity College Dublin. Winners of the The Senior Mens race are awarded the Gannon Memorial Cup. The race and the cup were established in 1947 to commemorate a distinguished UCD oarsman and UCD Medicine graduate, the late Captain Ciarán Gannon (UCD Medicine 1939).
The theme for this year’s meeting was NEW HORIZONS IN HEALTH PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION: Complexity, Culture and Communication.
UCD was well represented at the INMED 2015 Annual Scientific Meeting with 13 paper submissions and 5 students presenting their continued medical education research projects. Undergraduate medical student Mr Cathal Aherne, supervised by Dr Peter Holloway, took best student award for his research project ‘A novel mind-map slide-show hybrid for the standardised, interactive and graphical presentation of pathology topics.’
UCD Medicine elite athlete, Mark English has won a second European Championship medal after taking second place in the 800m Final of the European Indoor Championships in Prague. This performance builds on strong tactical race performances over the last year for the three times national champion.
