English Starts Olympic Year Strongly
UCD Elite Athlete, Mark English (Stage 4 Medicine) has opened 2016 with a series of fine performances as he prepares for the Olympic Games in Rio.
The Donegal runner finished in second place on Saturday 20th February 2016 in the 800 metres in the Glasgow Indoor Grand Prix. In his final race of his indoor season, the Letterkenny sprinter clocked a season’s best of 1:46.99 just short of his own Irish record of 1:46:82. He finished behind Polish athlete Adam Kszczot in a competitive field at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena. Kszczot also beat Mark to first place last year at the European Indoor Championships in Prague.
Earlier in the week, Mark set an Irish record as he won the 500m at in Stockholm, Sweden with a time of 1:00.93. Already qualified for Rio, Mark began 2016 with a strong performance over 800 metres at the PSD Meeting in Dusselfdorf at the beginning of the month. He ran an intelligent race coming through the field strongly to finish in second place behind Mussaeb Balla (Qatar) with a time of 1:47:28.
