UCD Clinician Scientist & Alumni Receive Innovation Awards

Prof Martin Steinhoff has been awarded one of three 2016 SFI-Pfizer Biotherapeutics Innovation Awards and two UCD alumni were among the other recipients. This prestigious funding award provides qualified academic researchers with an opportunity to deliver important potential discoveries for patients of unmet needs in the areas of immunology, oncology, cardiovascular and rare diseases.

The third edition of the UCD Student Medical Journal was launched with a stimulating panel discussion on burnout and work-life balance at the UCD Student Centre on Tuesday 26th April 2016. The UCD Student Medical Journal is now available in hard copy and online. The editorial team have invited contributors and volunteers for the fourth edition for which planning is now underway.

Penang Medical College Announce New President

The Board of Penang Medical College (PMC) have announced the appointment of Professor Stephen Doughty as its fourth president. Prof Doughty will move to PMC from his current position in September 2016 succeeding Professor Amir Khir. 

Prof Des Higgins to Receive Kimura Motoo Award

Prof Des Higgins is to receive the Kimura Motoo award in recognition of his significant contributions to the advancement of evolutionary biology, and to the field of molecular phylogeny specifically. The Kimura Motoo award acknowledges the most outstanding scientist worldwide from each of four research fields of evolutionary biology; population genetics, molecular phylogeny, molecular evolution and evolutionary genomics, and human evolution.

An international collaborative study, led by Dr Fiona McGillicuddy identified specific inflammatory proteins that could be used as novel biomarkers to flag patients who have difficulties with eliminating cholesterol from the body. The research and an accompanying editorial has been published recently in Circulation, a jounal with the highest impact journal in the cardiovascular field.

Prestigious Award for UCD Academic

Prof Cormac Taylor is to be recognised with the 2017 Takeda Distinguished Research Award by the American Physiological Society’s Gastrointestinal & Liver Physiology Section.  This prestigious prize is awarded annually to an outstanding investigator who is internationally recognised for his/her contribution to research in areas represented by the Section.  This is the first time that the award has been made to a scientist from outside the United States.
