International Clinical Trial Shows Drug Reduces Risk of Diabetes

The drug, liraglutide 3.0 mg may reduce diabetes risk by 80% in individuals with obesity and prediabetes according to the findings of an international study published today in The LancetProfessor Carel le Roux from the UCD Diabetes Complications Research Centre, UCD School of Medicine and Fellow, UCD Conway Institute is an obesity specialist and the corresponding author on this article.

Now firmly established as a key event in our academic calendar, the 2017 Clinical Commencement ‘White Coat’ Ceremony took place on Friday 17th February 2017 in UCD O’Reilly Hall, Belfield.  A key milestone for our students, it marks the point of full immersion into clinical training at our hospital sites or in the community. 

New Associate Deans Appointed

Professor Patrick Murray has announced the appointment of Associate Professor Suzanne Donnelly as Associate Dean for Programmes & Educational Innovation and Dr Jonathan McNulty as Associate Dean for Graduate Taught Studies.  Both are ex officio members of the School Executive Management Committee and the School Management Team.  The Dean has also appointed Dr Cliona McGovern, Director of Admissions to the School Management Team.

 

Medical Genetics Research Success

There was recent research success for Irish medical geneticists with two studies published in the American Journal of Medical Genetics.  The study of a child with a de novo chromosomal translocation and craniosynostosis featured on the front cover of the journal's January edition. Our researchers also published the first cross-border epidemiology study of the incidence of fragile X syndrome across the island.
