Medical Traineeship in Human Anatomy

Applications are invited for a full-time Medical Traineeship in Neuroanatomy.  The research project will focus on neuroimmunological and regenerative repair strategies after spinal cord injury, with an emphasis on anti-inflammatory mediators to enhance functional recovery. Successful candidates will undertake a graduate research degree while gaining skills and experience teaching functional and clinical anatomy to medical and allied health students.

National Cancer Strategy To Address Unique Needs of Adolescents and Young Adults

Unique needs of adolescents and young adults (AYA) are to be addressed in new National Cancer Strategy 2017-2026 launched recently by the Minister for Health, Mr Simon Harris TD.  Prof Owen Smith welcomes the focus on previously unmet needs of AYA's and notes that the new children's hospital will play a central role in the implementation of the strategy.

Missense Mutation Causes Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 29

Our researchers have recently published the genetic basis of a family’s presentation with ataxia. They have found a missense mutation in a gene known as ITPR1 which causes spinocerebellar ataxia type 29 (SCA29).  The pathogenic gain of-function missense mutation was located within the suppressor region of ITPR1. This is the first report of a gain-of-function disease mutation and contributes to our understanding of how variation in this gene can lead to neurological dysfunction.
