Honorary Degree for Distinguished UCD Alumnus

Distinguished UCD alumnus Dato Dr Leslie Lam was conferred with an honorary NUI Doctor of Medicine degree at a special ceremony in Singapore on Thursday 19th June 2014 in recognition of achievements in clinical cardiology in Singapore, his contributions to medical education and research, and his support for the arts in UCD and in Ireland. 

The award was presented by Dr Maurice Manning, Chancellor of the National University of Ireland in the presence of UCD President, Professor Andrew J Deeks following a citation read by Prof Patrick Murray, Dean of Medicine and Head of School, UCD School of Medicine & Medical Science.

UCD Scientist Awarded Wellcome Trust Fellowship for Cancer Research

Dr Colm J. Ryan has been awarded a Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellowship worth €300,000 over four years to work in Systems Biology Ireland . Dr Ryan, ICON Newman Fellow in Genomics will be the first recipient of this prestigious award, funded under the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), Health Research Board (HRB) and Wellcome Trust Biomedical Research Partnership, to be hosted in an Irish laboratory.

UCD Scientist Secures Prestigious Rheumatology Research Award

Dr Ursula Fearon has secured a prestigious research award which was announced last week at the EULAR (European League Against Rheumatism) Annual European Congress in Paris.  One of only five awards, the highly competitive ASPIRE research grant is funded by Pfizer Europe and aims to support research in autoimmune diseases within Rheumatology and Dermatology.

UCD Medicine Gala Dinner 2014

‌‌Over 600 guests attended the 2014 Gala Dinner which took place in O'Reilly Hall on Thursday 5th June 2014 following the annual Medicine Conferrings.  Participants at this black tie event included recent graduates, their families and friends, School and University staff as well as VIP guests from our clinical affiliates. 

A range of student and teaching awards were presented by UCD President, Prof Andrew Deeks who was attending his first UCD Medicine Conferring events. Among the prizes awarded this year was the inaugural Professor Peter Dervan Memorial Medal for Excellence in Cancer Pathology. 

Guest of Honour was distinguished alumnus, Dr Anne Merriman MBE (UCD Medicine 1957), leader of hospice development in Africa.  Recently nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, Dr Merriman gave an insightful and inspiring address which transfixed the audience and which drew on her extensive experience in palliative medicine.

2014 UCD Medicine Conferring

The 2014 UCD Medicine Conferring took place on Thursday 5th June 2014 with 200 undergraduate and graduate entry students awarded degrees in Medicine and 54 postgraduate students awarded a range of graduate research degrees.  The graduands were addressed by distinguished UCD Alumni, Prof Eilis McGovern and by UCD President, Professor Andrew Deeks who was presiding at his first UCD Conferring Ceremony.
