HepCare Europe is an EU-funded multi-country collaboration which aims to improve the efficacy of Hepatitis C treatment through innovative community care pathway for people at risk. The four country initiative which seeks to reduce the morbidity and mortality related to Hepatitis C is led by Prof Jack Lambert and Prof Walter Cullen.
We offer our congratulations to Dr Ew Ju Vern who has been awarded first place in the final examinations at Penang Medical College in the 2016 Medicine Conferrings in Penang. The perennial award-winning student adds the overall first place in the UCD / RCSI Final Examinations to her extensive collection of prize and medals awarded during her studies at UCD and in Penang.
Congratulations to Prof Amir Khir (President and Dean, Penang Medical College) who was conferred with the honorary degree of Doctor of Medicine honoris causa by the National University of Ireland at the 16th PMC Convocation Ceremony in Penang.
A number of student awards were presented by UCD Radiography & Diagnostic Imaging at a reception for new graduates, their family and friends following the 2016 UCD Radiography Conferring Ceremony. The reception was held in the Kevin Barry Gallery of the UCD Charles Institute.
The 2016 UCD Radiography Conferrings took place at O'Reilly Hall, Belfield on Friday 17th June 2016 with undergraduate and graduate degrees being conferred on graduands by UCD President, Prof Andrew Deeks. In total, 31 students were conferred bachelor of science (BSc) in radiography degrees from our four year undergraduate radiography programme. Masters of Science (MSc) degrees were award in computed tomography (1), magnetic resonance imaging (9) and ultrasound (17) and several doctor of philosophy (PhD) degrees were also conferred.
UCD Alumnus, Professor John Hyland has been appointed as 170th President of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland following the College’s biennial Council Elections. Mr Kenneth Mealy, a Consultant General Surgeon with a special interest in gastrointestinal surgery, based at Wexford General Hospital, has been appointed as the new Vice-President.
It is with regret that we report the recent passing of Dr Francis Xavier Hardiman M.D. , J.D. A graduate of UCD Medicine Class of 1970, Dr Hardiman had a distinguished career of public service both as an obstetrician/gynaecologst and as an attorney practicing in civil law. We extend our sympathies to his family, friends and former colleagues

A number of student medals and awards were presented at the UCD Medicine 2016 Gala Dinner which took place on Thursday, 2nd June 2016 at UCD O'Reilly Hall, Belfield.
Dr Patrick Kelly (UCD Medicine 2008) who is currently serving as a UN Peacekeeper in the Golan Heights has received an Alumni Honours Award for his outstanding contribution to public service and global peacekeeping. Captain Kelly was presented with the award at the European Access Network 25th annual conference, held recently at University College Dublin.
Distinguished UCD Medicine alumnus, Professor Conor Ward (UCD Medicine 1946) was conferred with a degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa at the 2016 UCD Medicine Conferring Ceremony at UCD O’Reilly Hall on the 2nd June 2016. The Emeritus UCD Professor of Paediatrics was conferred with the degree by UCD President, Professor Andrew J Deeks in recognition of his services to paediatric cardiology, medical education and clinical research.
The 2016 UCD Medicine Conferring took place recently at O'Reilly Hall, Belfield with 230 graduands being conferred with Medicine as well as 43 doctoral and masters graduate degree awards. There were the now customary examples of multigenerational Medicine graduates as well as those who were the first in their families to attend third level education. Distinguished UCD Medicine alumnus and former UCD Professor of Paediatrics, Prof Conor Ward was conferred with a degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa. The award was given in recognition of Prof Ward’s distinguished career as a paediatric cardiologist, a medical educator and a researcher.
The Royal Irish Academy (RIA) has elected five new members from University College Dublin in recognition of their academic excellence. The group includes Professor Walter Kolch, Director of Systems Biology Ireland and Professor Garret A. FitzGerald (UCD Medicine UCD Medicine 1974, UCD MD 1980 and UCD DSc 2004 ) who is Chair of Systems Pharmacology at University of Pennsylvania.
It is with regret that we note the sudden passing of Associate Professor Peter Barry, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at St Vincent’s University Hospital and senior retinal surgeon at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital, Dublin after a short illness.
