Dr Cliona McGovern presented on Female Genital Mutilation in Northern Kenya at UCD Breakout Research on "Human Rights in Focus".  The aim of this research is to learn from very different cultures in order to assist medical practitioners in Ireland to help patients who have undergone FGM.

Kathleen Lynn Children's Hospital?

It is nearly 100 years since Dr Kathleen Lynn first proposed building a national tertiary paediatric hospital.  We sincerely hope that the hospital is built promptly, properly and resourced to deliver the country's ambition. A number of staff and alumni have suggested that the new hospital be named after the distinguished UCD Medicine alumna, who founded our first national children's hospital.

UCD HMRG had a strong showing at two prestigious international conferences being held concurrently in Milan this week, the 19th international Workshop on Co-morbidities and Adverse Drug Reactions (IWCADR) and the 16th European AIDS Clinical Society Conference (EACS). These conferences are the foremost conferences in HIV and Co-Morbidities in Europe in 2017. HMRG researchers presented a total of 10 abstracts, with 6 oral presentations covering issues relating to bone disease, dyslipidaemia, quality of life and clinical trials of new antiretroviral agents for the management of HIV, in collaboration with colleagues across the globe.

Irish Medical Students win European Neurology Competition

A team of Irish medical students took the inaugural 'The Move' European Neurology competition at the Pitié-Salpêtrière, Paris – the birthplace of modern day neurology.   This innovative simulation training approach developed by Prof Emmanuel Flamand-Roze, endeavours to overcome neurophobia among medical students by providing them with a neurology semiologica approach to learning.

UCD Alumnus Awarded Steevens' Scholarship

Congratulations to Dr Eavan McGovern (UCD Medicine 2007) who was recently awarded a Dr. Richard Steevens' Scholarship.  This prestigious award is given annually to Specialist or Senior Registrars with strong track records in achievement. Dr McGovern has commenced a one year Clinical Fellowship in Transitional Care Neurology in the Brain and Spine Institute, Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris, France.

 

2017 Student Summer Research Awards

The 2017 Student Summer Research Awards took place on the 4th Oct 17 at the UCD O'Brien Centre for Science. There was a high standard of oral presentations by the eight student finalists who conducted 8-week research projects at UCD and at our clinical and international affiliates. 

Older Stored Blood as Safe as Fresher Blood for Transfusions in Critically Ill Adults

The TRANSFUSE clinical trial study shows that the age of transfused blood cells does not impact patient survival rates among critically ill adults and will help end speculation that fresher blood may be superior for critically ill patients.
