<![CDATA[2019 UCD Medicine Clinical Commencement ‘White Coat’ Ceremony]]> The 2019 UCD Medicine Clinical Commencement ‘White Coat’ Ceremony took place in UCD O’Reilly Hall on Wednesday 13th February 2019.  A key milestone for our medical students, the ceremony marks the formal transition from a predominantly class room-based education to full immersion into clinical training at our affiliated teaching hospitals and with general practices in the community.  UCD Medicine alumna and President of Medical Council, Dr Rita Doyle gave an inspiring keynote address drawing on her career as a GP, an educator and the head of the statutory medicine regulatory authority.

<![CDATA[Raising Voices for World Cancer Day 2019]]> To mark World Cancer Day, five school and community choirs combined for a concert highlighting cancer awareness featuring Irish singer/songwriter Don Mescall. This lunchtime concert followed an educational session earlier in the morning at the Conway Institute involving personal stories of those whose lives have been affected by cancer, as well as talks from researchers focusing on new ways of diagnosing and treating cancer.

<![CDATA[Novel Genetic Insights into Evolution of Skin Colour]]> A new genetic study of over 6,000 Latin Americans, who have a mix of Native American, European and African ancestry reveals novel insights into the evolution of skin colour.  The study published in Nature Communications identifies new genetic regions involving skin, eye and hair colour and show an important variation in one gene that is seen uniquely in East Asians and Native Americans.

<![CDATA[Secret Smokers Risk Foetal Malnourishment]]> A significant number of pregnant women in Ireland may be "secret smokers", leaving their baby at risk of being malnourished.  A study by the UCD Centre for Human Reproduction reveal that 10% of mothers-to-be failed to disclose their smoking habit which could result in a growth-restricted or malnourished baby.

This panel will meet 4-6 times a year to learn about and discuss epidemics and critical care research; advise on elements of the research process, and; improve the relevance and acceptability of critical care research design. The public panel will be of interest to individuals who'd like to learn more about epidemics and advise on the design of critical care research. The group are particularly interested in hearing from individuals who have experience (themselves/family member) of intensive care settings.

<![CDATA[Phase II recAP Data for Sepsis-associated Acute Kidney Injury ]]> An international research team exploring the development of recombinant human Alkaline Phosphatase (recAP) for the treatment of inflammatory diseases published data on the recently completed STOP-AKI Phase II study of recAP in the treatment of sepsis-associated Acute Kidney Injury (AKI).  The results were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and were presented at both the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine in Paris and at the American Society of Nephrology Kidney Week in San Diego.
