UCD Medical Students Win Jack Flanagan Medal in Gerontology

A team of four UCD Medicine students fought off strong competition from their counterparts in other Irish medical schools to take the Jack Flanagan Medal in Gerontology. The competition is named after Ireland’s first geriatrician, Dr Jack Flanagan who was the first doctor in Ireland to specialise in modern day geriatric medicine.

Dr. Elizabeth Barrett has been awarded the Richard Steevens Scholarship by the Health Services Executive. Scientists at UCD Develop New Diagnostic Test for Rare Liver Disorder

Scientists at University College Dublin have identified a new genetic cause for a rare form of liver failure that affects young children. As a result, the UCD group has developed a non-invasive diagnostic test for this disorder, which can be used as a substitute for painful liver and muscle biopsies. The findings are published in Molecular Genetics and Metabolism.
