Community, Forensic & Legal Medicine

The Community, Forensic & Legal Medicine Section comprises academic specialists that traditionally operate outside the acute or specialist hospital environment.

The Primary Care group is responsible for teaching of general practice medicine, the training and development of advance paramedics and for the engagement of an extensive network of general practitioners within our teaching and research programmes.

The Forensic & Legal Medicine group is a specialist team with expertise in medico-legal affairs, ethics, forensic medicine, and for training of healthcare professionals as they engage as witnesses and expert witnesses with the courts systems.

The Section is led by Prof Gerard Bury, Professor of General Practice Medicine who is also the Director, UCD Centre for Emergency Medical Science.

Subject Areas Within this Section

Forensic and Legal Medicine

This group is concerned with the application of medical knowledge to legal problems and proceedings.  It comprises physicians with specialist forensic medicine training or legal professionals with an expertise in medical jurisprudence.

Primary & Community Care Medicine

Also known as general practice medicine, this subject area is concerned with the administration of non-specialist care across a wide range of medical conditions.

Biography: Professor Gerard Bury

Professor Gerard Bury is Director of the Centre for Emergency Medical Science. A practising General Practitioner, he is also Professor of General Practice at UCD.

Professor Bury is also Head of the Section of Community, Forensic & Legal Medicine at UCD.
