Pre-Hospital Immediate Care Skills at Ireland's Centre of Excellence

CEMS provides courses that offer the knowledge and skills needed to deal with acute cardiac, trauma and paediatric emergencies. Participants include general practitioners, practice nurses, ambulance personnel and other healthcare professionals. The multi-disciplinary teaching faculty includes general practitioners, nurses, paramedics and advanced paramedics.

Course Description | Immediate Care Cardiac

The aim of the course is to provide participants with the clinical competence to manage life-threatening cardiac related emergencies in a pre-hospital setting. The course content is based on refreshing the participant’s knowledge of the chain of survival, the recognition and management of life threatening arrhythmias, the roles of individual team members in managing cardiac arrest and the administration of anti-arrhythmic and other cardiac medications. The course will focus on practical skills such as:

  • Management of life threatening emergencies
  • Integration of critical procedures in a simulated emergency situation
  • Basic and advanced airway management and oxygen therapy
  • Use of Automated External Defibrillator

Course Description | Immediate Care Trauma

This section equips the participant to manage trauma related life-threatening emergencies in a pre-hospital setting. The course content is a mixture of sessions dealing with the principles of management of serious trauma and participation on a range of skill stations. Much of the day is spent on skill stations allowing sufficient time for hands-on practice of skills and familiarisation with the equipment needed to manage and stabilise a trauma patient. The course is planned around road traffic accident procedures, planning and preparation. Concepts learned in this module are applicable to any trauma situation. The course will focus on practical skills such as:
  • Dealing with head injuries and the multi-system trauma victim
  • Primary and secondary patient surveys
  • Spinal Immobilisation
  • Airway management in a trauma patient
  • Fluid resuscitation
  • Close teamwork with the emergency services

Course Description | Immediate Care Paediatrics

The aim of this course is to offer clinicians, Doctors , Nurses, Advanced paramedics the opportunity to become more confident and competent in dealing with serious paediatric emergencies in the pre-hospital environment. The format of the day is a combination of lectures, skills stations, workshops and small group scenarios.

Topics include:

  • BLS/choking
  • Airway and ventilation
  • Pain management
  • Paediatric calculations
  • Management of anaphylaxis

There is a strong focus on hands on skills practice. Individual feedback will be based on ongoing assessment and an MCQ based on the course content delivered on the day. The clinical practice guidelines published by the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council will provide core background material for the day.

Course Description | Immediate Care Cardiac and Trauma (Refresher Course)

This intensive one day course will refresh skills and knowledge acquired on the full day cardiac and trauma courses. Ideally candidates should  have completed the full day courses within two years of doing the refresher course.

Course Description | Management of Anphylaxis in Primary Care

Overview

Since its introduction in early 2008, this course has attracted participants from a broad range of specialties including general practice, public health and the emergency services. A typical course would comprise the following:

18:45: Welcome and registration / Introduction and MCQ
19:00: PowerPoint Lecture
20:00: Discussion
20:15: Scenarios – 3 rotations stations x 30 mins

Station One:

(a) Management of Baby/Infant Allergic / Anaphylactic Reactions
(b) Management of Child Allergic / Anaphylactic Reactions

Station Two:

(a) Management of Adult Allergic Reaction
(b) Management of Adult Anaphylactic Reaction

Station Three:

(a) Drug calculations and preparation
(b) Auto-injector

22:00 MCQ review and close

The course is approved by the ICGP for CPD and by An Bord Altranais Cateogry 1 Post Registration approval
