Facilities & Resources
The Centre for Research in Infectious Diseases (CRID) established and directed by Prof. William W. Hall, has its own dedicated research building in UCD, specifically designed to host infectious disease research in Ireland. This facility holds state-of-the-art instrumentation and facilities including Biosafety level 2 (BL2) and BL3 (+) containment facilities, molecular virology and cellular biology laboratories and an Immunology Suite with CellQuest software (BD Biosciences); and autoMACS Pro instrument and MACS QUANT flow cytometer (Miltenyi Biotec). Importantly, the UCD-CRID benefits from the close proximity to the UCD-National Reference Laboratory (NVRL) resources and expertise.
Emerging & Existing Viral Diseases
The BioSafety Level 3 (+) containment laboratory is a facility for research into the pathogenesis and treatment of emerging and existing viral diseases. The BSL3 (+) laboratory has been built to facilitate the investigation of agents requiring high levels of containment such as agents associated with viral haemorrhagic fevers, arboviral infections, emerging viral pathogens such as influenza viruses including avian and pandemic viruses and investigation of flaccid paralysis cases following post-polio virus eradication.
Funding
Current and past research programmes are supported by Irish Aid and the Atlantic Philanthropies, Wellcome Trust, Japanese Foundation for AIDS Prevention, SFI, HRB, IRSCET and UCD-seed funding.
Collaboration
The UCD-CRID works in close collaboration with the UCD-Conway Institute, in particular with the Mass Spectrometry Resource directed by Dr. Giuliano Ellia and the Biological Imaging platform directed by Prof. Dimitri Scholz, and the UCD-Cell Screening Centre directed by Prof. Jeremy Simpson.
