Research Strand | INFECTION & INFLAMMATION

Despite significant progress in the control of infectious and inflammatory disorders, millions still die worldwide from infections and the incidence of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune disease is increasing.

  • How do viruses like HIV and Hepatitis C evade and undermine our natural defences?
  • Why are some people more likely to develop inflammatory bowel disease or chronic lung disease than others?
  • What causes the body to turn against itself, as it does in autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis?

These are some of the questions being addressed by researchers involved in the Infection, Inflammation and Immunity research network within the School.

The network encompasses scientific and clinical researchers from the School’s teaching hospitals (Crumlin Children’s Hospital, Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, St Vincent’s University Hospital) and the Conway Institute who are involved in research aimed at developing new therapeutic and clinical approaches to the treatment of infectious, inflammatory and immune disease.
