The competition for the Fulbright International Science and Technology Award 2011-2012 is NOW OPEN for applications.
This award offers a fully-funded PhD programme in the
United States to approximately 45 candidates worldwide who demonstrate unique aptitude and innovation in a number of scientific fields. The Award recipients receive assistance in gaining admission to prestigious
U.S. institutions and three years of fiscal support which includes: academic tuition and fee coverage, a monthly living stipend, book and supplies allowance, conference and research allowances, health and accident coverage, round trip airfare from home country to the United States , and specially tailored enrichment activities. Hosting U.S. institution are expected to provide support for the remaining expenses toward the completion of the Ph.D. J-1 visa sponsorship is granted for up to five years. Initiated in 2006, the Fulbright International Science & Technology Award provides students in science and technology with the

- April 2010 | Wellcome Trust - Postdoctoral Training Fellowships for MB/PhD Graduates
This scheme provides a unique opportunity for the most promising newly qualified MB/PhD graduates, or those who have achieved a high-quality PhD during or before starting their medical degree. It will enable successful candidates to make an early start in developing their independent research careers, by undertaking a period of postdoctoral training and can be tailored to allow them to continue their postgraduate clinical training.
Fellowships are for up to four years and, depending on the duration of the fellowship, would not be expected to exceed £350 000. Fellowships provide:
- Salary set by the host institution, according to age and experience
- Research expenses (e.g. materials and consumables, animals, small items of equipment)
- Travel and overseas subsistence support to attend scientific meetings

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs offers Irish citizens scholarships to assist them to study or carry out research for short and long-term periods at Italian universities or centres of excellence. The awards are offered at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
These awards entail:
• Financial support to offset the costs of studying in Italy
• Exoneration from university fees for degree courses (not individual modules)
• Insurance coverage for the terms of the scholarship

- May 2010 | Health Research Board - Cochrane Fellowships
This scheme is open to individuals resident on the island of Ireland working in the health and social care area as health practitioners, researchers or policy makers. As intensive and continuous training will be provided as part of the Fellowship, applications are invited from those with no prior experience or training in conducting systematic reviews.
The Fellowship provides the Fellow with protected time of up to two days per week for up to two years to conduct their review. The award covers systematic review training costs, salary-related costs and research expenses.

Do you have a plan for a new PhD programme that reaches across the traditional boundaries of medical research? Could you train scientists in a clinical context; bring maths, chemistry, physics or engineering to bear on a biomedical problem; or link academic with commercial or health policy research?
The Wellcome Trust wants to support up to four new Four-year PhD Programmes in the UK and Republic of Ireland. These programmes will give scientists the training and experience needed to drive discovery and translation in research areas inspired by the Trust’s strategic challenges:
- Maximising the health benefits of genetics and genomics
- Understanding the brain
- Combatting infectious disease
- Investigating development,ageing and chronic disease
- Connecting environment, nutrition and health
These new programmes are intended for the support of basic scientists rather than clinicians, and will join the programmes already funded by the Trust, which are renowned for the excellent training they give to aspiring researchers.
The principal applicant should be the proposed director of the programme, and a recognised international leader in his or her field.

- April 2010 | Centre for Ageing Research & Development in Ireland - CARDI Ageing Research Grants Programme
CARDI is inviting applications for grants to fund cross-border and inter-disciplinary research and to create networks of academics with the public, private and voluntary sectors to examine issues arising out of an ageing society in Ireland, north and south.
This call focuses on research that concentrates on the priority issues relating to ageing and older people in Ireland. Funding of up to €100,000 will be available for individual research projects, normally of 12 months duration.
Anybody seeking funding must submit the two-page summary (the PAR8 form) by noon on Wednesday 7 April 2010. The full application form will only be available through email, and sent to those who submit a PAR8.

Listed below are two European Science Foundation (ESF) Calls for Proposals, which will open this month and for which Irish researchers are eligible. The ESF Conference Call applies to conferences which will take place in 2012 and may be of particular interest since this will be the year when Dublin will be the City of Science.
ESF EXPLORATORY WORKSHOPS:
These small, interactive group sessions are aimed at opening up new directions in research to explore new fields with a potential impact on developments in science. The workshops, which usually last 1-3 days, have a wide participation from across Europe and involve mature scientists as well as young, independent researchers and scholars with leadership potential. The relatively small scale (in terms of people involved) provides an ideal platform for focus on the topic and for all participants to contribute to discussions and plan follow-up collaborative work. Interdisciplinary topics are greatly encouraged.
ESF funds approximately 50 workshops every year.
Eligibility: Applicants should be individual scientists/researchers based at European universities/research institutes (in the broad sense) in ESF Member Organisation countries (including Ireland).
Awards will be to a maximum value of €15,000

UCD Innovation Bursaries: Call for Proposals
Interdisciplinary PhD & Post-Doctoral ProgrammesThrough the TCD-UCD Innovation Alliance, the two universities have committed to ensuring that innovation and entrepreneurship skills are an outcome of doctoral education and post-doctoral training. To this end, both institutions are launching up to 10 PhD studentships (4-years from Sept 2010, new entrants only) and up to 5 post-doctoral bursaries (up to €5K each), to be awarded in UCD in 2010. Programmes must be interdisciplinary and contribute to an exploration of one of the UCD priority research themes:
- Earth Sciences, Energy and the Environment
- Global Ireland
- Health and Healthcare Delivery
- Information, Computation and Communications
NOTE 1: This call is for Academic and Research staff of UCD only at this point. In April 2010, successful programmes will be published and a call for applications for the studentships will be advertised both nationally and internationally. Funding can either be used to support the development of new project ideas, deliver small-scale productions or workshops, investigate and experiment with new methods of engagement through the arts, or develop new collaborative relationships between artists and scientists.

The EFSD/Novo Nordisk Partnership for Diabetes Research in Europe Programme will accept applications from all fields of diabetes research and including both basic and clinical research. The Programme invites applications for research projects in this area. In particular, proposals dealing with the following are especially, but not exclusively, welcome:
• Physiology of release and action of gut hormones including glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypetide (GIP); islet hormones including amylin and glucagon; localisation and expression of GLP-1, GIP, amylin and glucagon receptors and their regulation;
• Impact of hyperglycaemia on expression, release and action of gastrointestinal and pancreatic hormones;
• Cross-talk between gut, brain and islet signals;
• Neural regulation of the gut and islet and the role of central neurohormonal signalling in diabetes and obesity;
• Changes in entero-insular interaction induced by bariatric surgery;
• Neurohormonal regulation of weight loss, including gut, pancreatic and adipocyte-derived hormones.
Both in vitro and in vivo studies – in animal models as well as humans – will be considered.
Grants will be available of up to Euro 100,000 for basic research and up to Euro 300,000 for clinical research.
