Guidelines for Ethical approval

All research involving human subjects that is conducted by UCD staff or students, regardless of where the research is carried out, must be approved by the UCD Research Ethics Committee.

This includes any patient contact or questionnaires as well as research based on human specimens. Ethical approval is usually provided by the Local Ethics Committee (compliant with relevant legislation) in the jurisdiction relevant to where the research is carried out.

In such cases, where ethical approval has been granted by a Local Ethics Committee, then the investigator should apply to the UCD Human Research Ethics Committee for Exemption fromfull Review. This is essential so that the investigator is covered by UCD indemnity policy.

The 2 main approaches are:

  1. Apply for full ethical review – applies to projects being carried out within UCD or to cases where there is no Local Ethics Committee to cover the research being carried outside of UCD. Apply using form HREC doc 9 – form and guidelines are available on the UCD website.Apply for exemption from full review - applies to projects where approval has been granted by the Local Ethics Committee of the jurisdiction where the research will be carried out
  2. Apply for exemption from full review - applies to projects where approval has been granted by the Local Ethics Committee of the jurisdiction where the research will be carried out. Apply using form HREC doc 8 – form and guidelines are available on the UCD website.

Supervision

Prior to commencing your research you will need to meet with your supervisor and complete an initial meeting form.

Please make a copy of this form and attach a copy to your laboratory notebook and post the original to Dr. Amanda McCann C/O Conway Reception Desk, Conway Institute. Please complete this form prior to commencement of your project.

Laboratory notebooks

Your research journals need to be signed after each week by your supervisor and or co-supervisor.  At the end of 8 weeks there needs to be a final, dated signature from your supervisor. Each weekly and end of 8 week signature should be identified with a coloured sticker or something similar.

Do’s

  • Keep a daily hand written record
  • Ensure lab book signed off on a weekly basis
  • If you are not sure about how to keep your journal – ask your supervisor

Don’ts

  • Do not type pages and stick into book
  • Do not fill in at night
  • Do not fill in only at end of eight weeks
  • Do not use tippex!– if you make a mistake cross out, initial and date
