Funding Opportunities

The Wellcome Trust and the Health Research Board have opened their calls for Summer Student Research Grants (see below).  These funding opportunities can provide a stipend during your 8 week research project.   Please bring these opportunities to the attention of any potential supervisors.  These projects are based on the student application and on the research project itself.

Health Research Board Summer Student Scholarship

The Health Research Board invites applications for Summer Student Scholarships from undergraduate students in a health or social care-related discipline to support their participation in research during the summer months in 2015.

The purpose of the student scholarships is to encourage an interest in research and to give the student an opportunity to become familiar with research techniques. The nominated Host Institution will approve and submit each application on behalf of the applicant.  Please make this a time consideration when preparing your grant application. Please see the Guidance Notes below for further details.

WHO should apply?

Undergraduate students who are studying in a relevant discipline at a university/third level institute in Ireland but not in the final year of their degree course and who have not previously received a Summer Student Scholarship from the HRB.

In line with the HRB strategy the project must fall within one of the following research areas: patient oriented research, health services research, or population health research. Applications that focus solely or predominantly on basic biomedical research are not eligible.

WHAT is the value of the award?

The amount paid will be €250 per week for a maximum of eight weeks and is paid to the student by the nominated Host Institution.

WHEN is the DEADLINE for applications?

The deadline for the submission of applications is 1 pm Tuesday, 10 February 2015.

How to apply?

All applications must be submitted via GEMS - the HRB's online grant application system at the link below.  Queries should be sent to Angelena Rea at

Wellcome Trust Scholarship

These awards provide promising undergraduates with hands-on experience of research during the summer vacation, with the aim of encouraging them to consider a career in research.

Scholarship holders in the past have included students of biological sciences (including biology, sports science and pharmacy) and medics, vets, dentists and optometrists.

Students focusing on natural sciences or computing degrees are welcome to use this scheme as a taster for research in the biomedical sciences; however, a suitably focused biomedical research report project would be required.

A report is available containing some statistical information about the Biomedical Vacation Scholarship scheme and its history, plus abstracts from a selection of projects funded in 2014.

The deadline for the submission of applications is 13th February 2015.
