Professional Certificate IOFB Screening

Professional Certificate Intra-Orbital Foreign Body Screening

Course Features

  • Developed for radiographers working in the magnetic resonance environment.
  • Includes theoretical and practical components.
  • Accommodates professionals in full time employment through distance-learning approach.

Who Should Take This Course?

This course is directed towards radiographers working in the magnetic resonance environment, and especially those involved in screening for intra-orbital foreign bodies. Most of the course material is delivered by distance learning in order to facilitate radiographers in full-time employment and their employers.

What Will I Learn?

Course description

Metallic foreign bodies in the eye are common ophthalmic injuries. Due to the potential risk associated with introducing a patient with metallic material in the orbit to a strong magnetic field, it is necessary to screen at-risk individuals for the presence of intraorbital metallic foreign bodies prior to entering the MRI suite.

Written and verbal screening is undertaken in the first instance; however, imaging is sometimes required for further screening.

Learning outcomes

This course will equip radiographers working in the MRI environment, who currently undertake verbal and written screening of patients for intra-orbital foreign bodies (IOFBs), with the skills and expertise necessary to:

  • Make clear judgements about the appropriate screening methods for individual patients and clinical sites.
  • Select appropriate imaging when required.
  • Perform projection radiographs to screen for IOFBs and make diagnostic decisions.

How/Where Will I Learn?

  • Innovative and effective teaching and assessment methods are utilised, with the majority of the course delivered online.
  • Students will develop practical image interpretation skills over time through building up a clinical portfolio.
