Course Overview

The course will provide training for doctors to undertake sexual assault forensic examinations and will lead to the award of a postgraduate Certificate. The course will provide the basic skills to undertake these examinations and present the clinical findings to the courts.

Who Should Take This Course?

Medical practitioners who undertake examinations in cases of child, adolescent or adult female or male sexual assault.

What Will I Learn?

The course will be part-time over two semesters.

The first module will be taught with three two-day sessions, including lectures, seminars, consultation, clinical examination, report writing and courtroom skills workshops; and with self-directed learning with feedback and discussions in small groups. Course members will keep personal learning portfolios to plan, implement and assess their learning. Assessment will be by continual assessment, assessment of presentations and learning portfolios, and a written MCQ examination.

During the second module, students will observe or undertake 10 sexual assault examinations under the supervision of a Mentor, and will write-up a casebook with medico-legal commentaries under the supervision of a mentor. Assessment will be by continual assessment, assessment of the casebook and an oral examination.

  • The course is open to registered medical practitioners who are presently, or wish to, undertake examination in cases of child, adolescent, or adult male or female sexual assault.
