Dr Darina O’Flanagan

Dr Darina O’Flanagan MB, MPH, FFPHMI, FRCPI, is Director of the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC). A graduate of Trinity College, Dr O’Flanagan was appointed as a Consultant in Communicable Disease Control in Wales and later returned to Ireland to take up a position as a Specialist in Public Health Medicine in the Department of Public Health, Eastern Health Board. She was appointed as Director of the Health Protection Surveillance Centre in November 1998. She serves on a number of national advisory groups to the Department of Health including the Pandemic Influenza Expert Advisory Committee and the National Immunisation Advisory Committee. Dr O’Flanagan is a member of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) Advisory Forum and is the HPSC national contact point for the International Health Regulations and European Early Warning and Response System.

Dr Donal Sammin

Dr Donal Sammin graduated from the UCD Veterinary School in 1991. He then worked in veterinary practice for two years, followed by a year as a clinical scholar in Glasgow Veterinary School and as part of the Residency training in Veterinary Pathology at UCD. He joined the Department of Agriculture's Veterinary Laboratory Service in 1997 and has worked with the Department in veterinary laboratory diagnostic investigations since then. He completed PhD studies on Chlamydial abortion in sheep in 2003, and held a two year career break based in Rome working with the FAO on foot-and-mouth disease (2003-2005). He has held the post of Head of Veterinary Laboratories with DAFM since 2010.
