Exploring Boundaries between Art & Anatomy

UCD School of Medicine in conjunction with the National College of Art & Design host an interdisciplinary workshop entitled ‘What is a real limb? Exploring boundaries between Art and Anatomy’. The ‘hackathon’ event takes place on Friday, 29th April 2016 at the UCD Charles Institute of Dermatology & UCD Health Science Centre, Belfield.

The design workshop will focus on artificial limbs, both in an Artistic and Anatomical perspective. It is aimed at an interdisciplinary group of students in various schools such as UCD Medicine, Physiotherapy, Design and Engineering. Students will receive brief introductory lectures on Anatomy and Prosthetic limbs, and Design thinking as well as a lecture from a prosthetic user.

The ‘hackathon’ workshop will involve five teams of students, each comprising two Medical Device Design students and one student from each of Engineering, Medicine and Physiotherapy degree programmes. The teams will interact with the prosthetic user and design their own concept of a limb. The final concept of each team will be fabricated in the NCAD Workshop, and will also include prototyping techniques like 3D printing.

Exploring the Boundaries between Art & Anatomy - NCAD/UCD Medicine Workshop - 29th April 2016 at NCAD

The workshop is made possible through a NCAD/UCD Seed Funding Grant to Mr Muthu Thangaramanujam (Medical Informatics Demonstrator / PhD Candidate in Anatomy and Medical Informatics) and Mr Enda O’Dowd (Lecturer & Course Director, MSc in Medical Device Design, NCAD). Mr Thangaramanujam is a Chartered Physiotherapist currently pursuing an interdisciplinary PhD in Translational Medicine involving anatomy, medical informatics and bioengineering. His research focuses on 3D printing of patient-specific anatomical structures as medical devices.
