Friends of UCD Mícheál Ó Cléirigh Institute

We invite you to support the work of the Institute. The Irish Franciscan archive is a priceless and unique collection which is strongly connected with the history and identity of the Irish at home and abroad. It contains some of the most important manuscripts, documents and early printed books in Ireland's cultural heritage. As a Friend of the collection, you can share in our research and conservation projects by funding research scholarships or large research and conservation projects. And in doing so, you will be added to the historical list of donors to the Franciscan heritage since Fearghal Ó Gadhra financed the Annals of the Four Masters in the early seventeenth century.

Future projects in need of patrons

  • The Mícheál Ó Cléirigh building - 15 million is required to build a purpose-built archive, conservation, library and research centre on the UCD campus. It will be a cultural icon in Ireland’s largest university with space for exhibitions and innovative cultural events.
  • Supporting a scholar to undertake research in Irish history and civilization – a PhD student costs €16,000 per annum, a Post-Doctoral Fellow €35, 161 per annum
  • Conservation and cataloguing of valuable and rare books, paper documents and vellum manuscripts
  • Research projects on Ireland and Europe and the Irish Franciscans’ role in the shaping of modern Ireland
  • ‘Bringing history to the people’ – an innovative venture of outreach education reviving an interest in local heritage in communities throughout Ireland

All donations are eligible for tax relief under PAYE and Self-Assessment tax systems when paid through UCD Foundation Limited, an eligible charity under section 848A, Taxes Consolidation Act 1997. UCD Foundation Ltd. (ucdfoundation@ucd.ie) would provide all necessary assistance and administration with taxation issues.
