ARCH40960 Sustainable Strategies

Academic Year 2022/2023

This module examines the role of sustainable development in cultural and natural World Heritage conservation and asks whether World Heritage sites have become a focus of best practices in sustainability. It will discuss what is meant when the term "development" is used and whether Environmental Degradation is an inevitable consequence of development. In particular the module will discuss the origins of the concept of Sustainable Development and how global issues such as Earth Summit (Rio), Agenda 21 (Europe), World Bank and Climate Change can all effect sustainable development. Issues surrounding alternative and appropriate technologies will also be discussed.
