This module introduces students to the principles of supply chain management. This includes an emphasis on how supply chain decisions should support the overall competitive strategy for an organisation, the concepts underpinning supply chain design, and a more detailed treatment of the mechanics of how a supply chain can be optimised in a globalised market. The specific application of these principles to the food sector is also covered, including considerations that are of special importance in this sector, such as sustainability, traceability, and safety.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students will be able to:
• Demonstrate an understanding of current supply chain management theory & practice
• Identify the key management decisions involved in designing and managing supply chains and explain their application in product and service contexts
• Apply tools and techniques in the design and optimisation of supply chain systems.
• Analyse the supply chain of a range of businesses within the food industry and devise strategies for developing and sustaining competitive advantage
• Manage and work as part of a team and demonstrate written, oral and presentation skills
• Engage in deeper learning using different learning strategies, and reflect on the process of learning
