CHN20030 Int. Written Chinese I

This course is designed for students who have completed Elementary Written Chinese II. The focus is on reading and writing competencies, with guided study using ICT and web-based materials. In addition to further consolidating and enhancing the skills that students have acquired in reading and writing, the course aims to develop students’ accuracy, coherence and range of vocabulary in written Chinese moving towards an intermediate level of communicative competency to serve both social and business-related purposes. The course also introduces students to learning Chinese with the assistance of computers, smartphones and other online resources. Students are expected to complete assignments and examinations aided partially by digital devices.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this course, students will be able to:
1) Understand the main ideas of simple connected texts related to personal background and interests, social conventions, travel and transportation and short invitations etc..
2) Understand sentences or texts consisting of combinations of learned materials on the topics given above.
3) Exhibit basic ability to extrapolate the meaning of texts which contain a reasonable number of unfamiliar words.
4) Convey basic ideas and intentions related to the above topics appropriately.
5) Construct sentences consisting of combinations of learned materials on the topics above with correct pronunciation.
6) Build up a vocabulary of 1,000 words.

Learning Requirements:

In order to take this module, students need to have prior knowledge which is equivalent to HSK Level 2.

Learning Exclusions:

The students who are native Mandarin speakers are not eligible to take this module as an elective.

The lecturer reserves the right to assess the language competence of all students. Students whose competence is incompatible with the level of their chosen elective module will be advised to transfer to a more appropriate language module.
