COMP41380 Communications and Outreach

It is becoming ever more important for scientists to be able to convey their research to a broad range of audiences. This module aims to develop skills in postgraduate students of science and technology related disciplines in a wide range of presentation styles and skills suitable for use in an outreach setting. Participants will be expected to engage in scholarly discussion with their peers on best practices from a communications and outreach perspective. Students will have an opportunity to direct approximately 30% of the module content based on their own interests. Throughout the duration of the course, students will be given opportunities to develop tailored overview presentations of their work and also to perform science outreach activities with primary schools. They will also have the chance to develop and perform their own outreach activity for a primary school audience based on a topic that interests them. Throughout this module, students will be encouraged to self-assess based on feedback from their peers.

Learning Outcomes:

Through participation in this module students should be able :
To develop effective presentation skills to a variety of audiences
To develop peer review skills and self monitoring skills
To co-ordinate and demonstrate effective planning of outreach activities
To demonstrate knowledge and critique of the principles of communication and outreach in relation to their own practice and subject area
To critically evaluate their own communication and outreach approaches and their impact on the audience in question
To take responsibility for evaluating their own performance based on feedback from a variety of sources (peer, school students, teachers) and demonstrate willingness to change in light of this feedback
To demonstrate an awareness of UCD, College and School policies and procedures that impact on their roles as an ambassador and discuss their implications for your practice
