COMP41500 Virtualisation & Cloud Computing

Academic Year 2018/2019

This module introduces Desktop and Server Virtualisation to include different options and vendors available, with a key focus on Open Source Architecture. Students will be inroduced to some of the different server (Microsoft Hyper-V, VMWare ESXi, OpenStack) and Desktop (Virtual box and Virtual PC) virtualisation environments available. The topics covered include introductions to the different types of virtualisation, reviewing virtualisation products.

The module includes ongoing lab work which will include:

(1) Installing and managing a VMWare ESXi environment.
(2) Setting up Virtual machines.
(3) Installing vCenter Server managing Virtual machines through vCenter Server via vSphere clients.
(4) Setting up and managing other vendor products to include Open Source alternatives.

Any student taking this module must have their own laptop.

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

(1) Describe the different types of Virtualisation environment.
(2) Understand Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Environments.
(3) Be able to understand and compare product offerings to include VMware, Microsoft, and Open Source products.
(4) Install, configure and manage VMWare ESX(i) Servers.
(5) Install, configure and manage VMWare vCenter Server.
(6) Install, configure and manage VMWare vSphere Clients.
(7) Install configure and manage a selection of other Desktop and server Virtualisation products.
