Web services are having a profound effect on the worlds of business and of software development. The premise of web service and SOA technologies is where a world of cooperating services, where application components are assembled quickly and with ease into end-to-end services which can be coupled to create business processes and flexible SOA applications which span organisations and computing platforms.

This module offers a comprehensive and up to date treatment of web services and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), giving you all you need to know to gain a solid foundation in this area.

Any student taking this module must have their own laptop. Please note that leactures for this module will take place in the Institute of Public Administration (IPA) building in Ballsbridge (usually evenings). Lecturer: Barry Cornish (IPA). Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should:

(1) Describe the concepts of web services, SOA and the various types of systems/technologies involved.
(2) Understand XML and how it relates to web Services.
(3) Understand SOAP, its specifications and data structures.
(4) Apply Web Services Description Language (WSDL).
(5) Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the Universal Description, Discovery and Integration framework.
(6) Have a working knowledge of the security mechanisms and policies that govern SOA based applications.
(7) Understand SOA modelling, its Design and development.
(8) Understand Web Service management.
(9) Discuss the emerging trends with cloud computing and Cloud services.
