CULP40290 Museums & Heritage Policy

Academic Year 2019/2020

An introduction to the field of heritage studies, with a concentration on the evolution of heritage as a field of institutional and professional practices in the contemporary world, with particular reference to the history and evolution of the museum. The module will also include: an exploration of values in heritage conservation; the application of concepts in cultural economics; and the impact of tourism on the heritage field. A number of guest lecturers will provide a focus on a number of these themes from the perspective of the professional practitioner.

Have a broad understanding of how heritage has emerged as a field of professional and institutional practice in the contemporary world

Understand the history and evolution of the museum as a cultural institution

Appreciate the philosophical, historical and cultural dimensions of conservation values

Be able to apply basic concepts in cultural economics to the field of heritage

Appreciate the impact of tourism and tourism policies on culture and heritage

Understand how collections management policies apply to museum practices
