CVEN30380 Group Design Project

Academic Year 2022/2023

The focus of this module is on integrating your learning from other modules and applying it to realistic problems. Students will work together in groups, and as part of a design team they will create and test ideas to meet a specific client brief (building design, transport schemes, flood defence etc). The scale of the projects will be large, and students will be required to show creativity and teamwork as they come to terms with all the requirements and constraints that go with a complex brief. The module will be year long and studio led. Each group will be assigned an academic & industry mentor appropriate to their chosen project and support materials will be provided as needed throughout the process.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module the students should be able to:
1. Understanding the bigger picture (and conflicting demands) that surround real engineering projects;
2. Integrate the design skills that they have learned in previous modules and apply in the correct context to a real problem;
3. Work effectively as part of a design team to develop creative, innovative solutions;
4. Work through your design solutions, making use of the academic & industry feedback provided;
5. Make use of a variety of communication tools, with a particular focus on Building Information Modelling.

Indicative Module Content:

Understanding / interpreting a complex design brief
Design development - how to work through and evaluate various design options
Contextualising knowledge - how to break down a complex problem into smaller, more recognisable components
Using feedback - how to work with your industry / academic advisors
How to integrate the design work conducted and present this in an effective manner
Teamwork / communication - processes to allow groups work effectively
Software support - Building Information Modeling, structural analysis etc.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module will be primarily studio based and will involve the students working with industry and academic advisors to develop solutions to a realistic design brief. Lectures will be provided to address specific anticipated issues, as will appropriate software tutorials. Regular presentations (to the class and advisors) will be held, and self/peer assessment will be incorporated.
