EDUC43180 Inclusive Education:Assessment in Irish Classrooms Assessment within the new Teacher AllocationModel

This five-credit module aim to provide teachers with an introduction to assessment for all students, including those with additional support needs (ASN). The modules are suitable for teachers working in the position of principal, class teacher, special education teacher in mainstream primary, post-primary and special school settings.

Learning Outcomes:

○ Introduce learners to current definitions and the nature of diagnostic teaching and assessment including the purpose, advantages and limitations of various forms of assessment.
○ Review recent legislation and Department of Education and Skills (DES) circulars with regard to assessment.
○ Understand the role of NEPS and the Continuum of Support and how assessment maps on to it.
○ Understand the implications of TAM for teaching and learning.
○ Evaluate current school practice and policy in relation to the Continuum of Assessment (NCCA).
○ Examine the criteria for selection of assessment tools.
○ Examine the nature of informed consent and ethical considerations when assessing students.
○ Introduce learners to assessments for General Ability for students at primary and post-primary school level.

Indicative Module Content:

This module aims to provide teachers with an introduction to assessment for all students, including those with additional support needs (ASN). It will provide students with an overview of the national policies and legislative requirements that currently inform school assessment practices and policies. In particular, the use of assessment within the Teacher Allocation Model (TAM) is explored, as are the benefits and challenges involved in the development and maintenance of a comprehensive school assessment policy. The module will encourage teachers to critically examine the assessment policy in their schools and determine how school policy can support the fundamental link between assessment and individualised planning for students with ASN.
