HRM40860 HRM and the Gig Economy

Academic Year 2018/2019

This module examines the rise of the gig economy and the implications of gig work for HRM theory and practice. We will critically examine the evidence for developments such as increasing use by organizations of so called “gig workers” and technical developments supporting and enabling gig work processes. The issues associated with gig work including positive and negative aspects are examined from different perspectives – those of workers, managers, HRM practitioners and HRM scholars. The nature of the gig economy is debated as we explore the emerging models and frameworks mobilized to understand these developments. Students should expect to engage critically with evidence of these nascent developments and contribute actively to class discussions. Student engagement will be evoked through debate and discussion of case studies and legal developments and through critical analysis of media reports and academic articles on the gig economy.
