IS30320 Current Trends in Social Computing

Academic Year 2016/2017

Social computing tends to imply participation in the networks, programs and services made possible through the internet. Whether through joining, liking, up-voting, posting, editing, following or sharing, individuals can build their own social networks with services such as Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook.

In IS30320 Current Trends in Social Computing we will be focusing on the aspect and application of social computing in relation to citizen science.

The use of freely available analytical tools will be explored for practical applications in a number of social media tools and resources.
Students will also maintain a discussion blog to comment and reflect upon the readings and lectures.

In lectures we will also consider the implications for privacy and information security in light of the arrival of cloud computing and Big Data , and discuss other relevant concepts such as metadata, collaborative filtering, crowd-sourcing and the open social web.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Understand a range of current issues relating to social computing in particular in relation to citizen science.
2. Identify and discuss features of social capital in networks.
3. Visualise social network and web traffic data.
