ITAL30080 Italian Language III b

This is the sixth in a series of modules leading to proficiency in Italian at university level, corresponding roughly to Common European Framework Level C1. Students who have achieved at least a B grade in this module are deemed to have reached Level C1. The course builds on, perfects and expands the skills acquired in the previous language module (Italian Language IIIa: ITAL 30070), aiming in particular at perfecting students' competence in Italian-English translation and in precis from English to Italian as well as in precis from Italian to English, their comprehension of ever more complex written and spoken Italian utterances, in a variety of registers and styles, their ability to communicate accurately and effectively in written and spoken Italian (on a wide range of topics connected with their own lives and interests, current Irish, Italian and world affairs, and the history and culture of Italy, Ireland, and other relevant countries), their mastery of grammatical notions and the intricacies of Italian grammar, and more generally their autonomy as learners of second languages. Students attend weekly classes concerned with communication 'in' Italian (listening, speaking, reading, writing, precis) and with communication 'out of' Italian (precis, translation, linguistic analysis, explaining, etc.). Assessment is through class tests, designated homework exercises and end of trimester aural, written and oral examinations. Some of the designated homework assessments will be in the form of group project work. Students should note that they will need a good monolingual dictionary for this module.

In-module repeats of select component elements may be made available during this module for students.
Any in-module repeat is only available to students who have already sat and failed an in-term component; it carries a one-grade penalty; and it does not extend to orals or RDS exams.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to: convey information and express views in Italian (related to the topics listed in the Module Descriptor), in both written and spoken form, with accuracy and fluency; participate actively in Italian conversations, discussions and debates (on the topics listed in the Module Descriptor) carried out at normal speed; translate effectively, speedily and summarise short passages from Italian into English, in a wide range of registers and styles; summarise short passages from English into Italian; analyse textual styles and strategies; adopt, internalise and review effective autonomous strategies for the learning of foreign languages.

Indicative Module Content:

Course topics are likely to include core grammar content such as: revision of the passato remoto; the uses of the subjunctive, the periodo ipotetico and the sequence of tenses; revision of pronouns and pronominal forms (eg combined, relative); prepositional forms; the use of comparatives and superlatives; students will also be encouraged to suggest grammatical topics on which they wish to focus

This is part 2 of an advanced language course. It presupposes that students have passed ITAL 30070 (Italian Language IIIa) or have an equivalent standard of Italian. They should not take this module if they do not have the required standard. If in doubt they should contact the module coordinator.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students will complete regular assessed pieces of work throughout the semester and will also sit class tests. Some assessments will be individualised, while others will be in the form of group work (an important transferable skill). Feedback on assessments and class tests will be given in written format for individual students, while group feedback will also be offered in class on assessments and class tests as a whole. All feedback will normally be given in the week following the assessment/class test.

You will need a good-sized monolingual (Italian-Italian) dictionary.
