LAW30810 Comparative Law

This is a generic module descriptor that will cover different summer schools involving the School of Law. At present two US Law Schools, Fordham and Tulsa, offer such programmes and discussions are on-going with a number of US Law Schools about a bespoke programme offered at UCD in which their students could participate alongside a Chinese Law School. Each summer school will cover areas of comparative law and will be led by members of staff of the UCD School of Law and/or our partner Schools of Law in the United States and China.

Learning Outcomes:

On completing this module students will be able to:
• Demonstrate their skills in researching legal materials across a number of jurisdictions;
• Demonstrate an understanding of the particular area of law;
• Discuss the points of comparison and contrast in the particular area of law in differing jurisdiction;
• Elaborate on the reasons for the points of contrast and their impact on the nature and scope of the particular area of law in differing jurisdictions.
• Reflect on the development of their skills in the presentation of legal argument.

These learning outcomes will be demonstrated through the completion of the assessment in the modules selected by the student.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This is a module where UCD students join the Fordham Law summer School sharing the classroom with Fordham and Queens University Belfast law students . Law students learn to engage with approaches to law in a comparative context with student centred learning through class discussion and reading.
