LING20070 Minority & Endangered Languages

It is widely accepted that more than half of the 6,900 or so languages that exist are in danger of dying within a few generations. The topics examined in this module include the assessment of the vitality or level of endangerment of language, the factors that contribute to language endangerment and to language shift, language revitalisation, language rights and policies, language attitudes, language loss/death, parallels between language endangerment and global species endangerment.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the course students should be able to
-locate up-to-date descriptions, information and documents concerning linguistic situations globally, and evaluate such documentation
-explore the literature on a range of topics involving minority and endangered languages
-compare diverse linguistic situations
-explore the complexity of multi-lingual situations
-evaluate different approaches to determining the vitality or the level of endangerment of a language
