MIS41190 Leadership: A Phenomenological Approach

Academic Year 2017/2018

The aim of the module is to develop a more sophisticated understanding of leadership as a concept, and an appreciation for a range of tangible leadership practices with which you might begin to experiment in your own work and personal contexts.

We begin by tackling some of the misleading leadership mythology that abounds in the popular management literature, with a view to developing a more grounded and realistic perspective on the practice of leadership, its importance, and its limits.

We go on to examine the process by which one might become a more accomplished leader/manager, emphasising the importance of experience, engagement, intuition, and emotional awareness. We argue for a view of leadership/management that is concerned with the facilitation of an ongoing collective learning process.

Throughout, we will draw upon a phenomenological tradition of thought as a means of developing a distinctive approach to thinking about, and doing, leadership.
