This module will enable the student to:
1. examine patterns of illness in older age groups.
2. explore the concept of frailty.
3. examine the implication of co-morbidity in older age groups.
4. review common chronic illness related to ageing (geriatric syndromes).
5. understand acute illness in old age.
6. discriminate assessment of older people with chronic illness and acute episodes.
7. present appropriate, person centred-care pathways in care provision.
8. explore the principles and practice of rehabilitation of older people
9. identify methods of promoting health in later life through person-centred approaches.
10. understand the principles of palliative and end of life care using person centred-care approaches.

On completion the candidate will be able to critically demonstrate:

• an understanding chronic illness and acute episodes for older people.
• the application of principles of assessment in chronic and acute illness presentations of older people using person-centred care approaches.
• an articulation of appropriate person-centred care pathways in acute and chronic illness of older people.
• the ability to articulate methods of promoting the health of older people through person-centred care approaches.
• how person centred-care principles are applied to palliative and end of life care.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students receive general feedback on the MCQ after two weeks. Individual meetings with the student are facilitated to discuss the individual grade. For the assignment, this is end of term. Students will access the grad via the provisional exam grades, but will be offered a meeting to discuss grades. All students who fail any competent will be offered additional meetings
