This module, NMHS 43430: Foundations of Research, will provide the student with a robust understanding of research in terms of approaches, research design and process. The module is delivered online over one trimester (12 weeks). The content explores areas such as:

• The meaning and nature of knowledge
• Evidence based practice
• Articulation of a research question
• Planning issues in research
• Research ethics and rigour
• Research methodologies
• Research methods
• Constructing a research proposal

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module the student will be able to:
1. Understand the nature of knowledge and its differing epistemological stances
2. Critically appraise the methods of evidence based informed knowledge
3. Conduct a comprehensive literature review
4. Articulate a practice based research question
5. Understand different research approaches and designs.
6. Correlate research methodology and methods to the chosen research question
7. Identify issues related to ethics in the conduct of research
8. Articulate issues related to research rigour.
9. Conduct a practice based research proposal.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Students are presented with topics within lectures. Their active input is based on developing a research topic within their own area. Learning embedded in reflective practice, applying evidence based knowledge to practice. This improves skills and competencies in research.

Must have completed level 8 studies or successfully obtained UCD Recognised Prior Learning.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students receive general feedback on presentations within the group . Individual meetings with the student are then facilitated to discuss the individual grade. For the assignment, this is end of term. Students will access the grad via the provisional exam grades, but will be offered a meeting to discuss grades. All students who fail any competent will be offered additional meetings
