At the end of this module students will be able to:
Identify the range and properties of chemicals found in the workplace and explain associated bio-chemical actions and interactions in the human body;
Describe the toxic effects of major classes of toxicants and utilise toxicology (as a tool) to classify, label and develop information for Safety Data Sheets and for chemical risk assessments;
Develop and advise on the implementation of risk assessment and appropriate control and prevention strategies for toxic and hazardous chemicals;
Apply the information (relating to the toxic effects of chemicals on man in an occupational setting) to the larger environment and public and recognise the parallels that exist between the two compartments;
Demonstrate a basic understanding of the role occupational safety and health plays in public health, SEVESO, COMAH, REACH and chemical transportation.

Students must be aged over 23 years, be employed or seeking employment and have at least 3 years work experience. This module contains work-based assignments and if students are not working, they will be unable to meet the credit requirements.
