POL30160 Latin American Politics

Academic Year 2018/2019

This active-participatory course connects patterns of development and social change in Latin America to the evolution of social movements in the region. It explores a variety of cases that highlight significant shifts in the political, social and economic development and in the dynamics of social mobilization in the region in a comparative fashion.
The first part of the course introduces Latin America by examining the changing contexts in the region in order to understand changing responses to these contemporary political, social and economic developments. The second part of the course looks at dynamics, strategies and identities of social movements in the region. The third part explores how dynamics of resistance and repression interact with the state. The course concludes examining outcomes and future directions by assessing both continuities in social movement dynamics and new tendencies.
