PSY40060 Research Methods

Academic Year 2019/2020

The main aim of this module is to familiarise students with the range of research methodologies that are available in both qualitative and quantitative research. Students are also made aware of the theoretical approaches underlying research and applied issues in real world research. The course also aims to provide students with some of the skills required to critically evaluate research. This module is particularly suitable for students with limited research background or experience. Please note that the module runs on Friday afternoons in Weeks 1-6 of Spring.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course students should be able to:
1. Critically evaluate approaches to research
2. Identify the benefits and limitations of different methods available in research
3. Understand the elements of research design.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module includes a number of approaches:
- The main method of delivery is lectures but these are interactive with questions and group work used to engage the class
- Active learning - Over the course of the lectures students work to design and complete a mini systematic review, with guidance from the lecturer on the key phases and decisions
- Peer and group work - The systematic review is completed in pairs, with students using part of the class each week to actively work on their assignment.
