RDGY30470 Radiology & Diagnostic Imaging

Academic Year 2023/2024

This is an option module for Stage 4 UEM and Stage 2 GEM students. The overall aim is to enable students to develop appropriate knowledge and skills in radiology, which is a rapidly growing medical speciality which contributes significantly to diagnostics and therapeutics. Students will be introduced to the core imaging modalities available. Legislation and radiation dose considerations will be evaluated. Basic image interpretation, together with disease appearances will be taught. The module will facilitate the integration of students knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology with diagnostic imaging. This module will ensure that graduates will have the necessary basic knowledge and skills to treat patients in clinical settings where radiology plays an important diagnostic role.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, the successful student will be able to:
1. Understand basic principles of radiation protection and their role within this.
2. Understand the principles of recognising and interpreting radiographic image appearances
3. Differentiate between normal radiographic anatomy and features of commonly encountered pathologies of the skeletal system, chest and abdomen
4. Be able to define and recognise the image appearances of a range of disease processes on a number of specified modalities
5. Understand what modalities to request for patients for specific clinical indications and be able to critically evaluate these depending on patient presentation
6. Summarise the findings of radiographic image evaluation accurately and concisely
