SPAN40290 Spanish Novel: Town & Country

Academic Year 2017/2018

The realist novel came relatively late to Spain and was notably derivative of European models such as French Naturalism, which it nevertheless transmuted. Taking this as its point of departure, the module explores the various ways in which nature has been conceptualized since then in the Spanish novel. The module combines literary history, close reading and cultural study. Lectures are interspersed with weekly seminars during which students debate material they have prepared in advance. The module will require extensive reading of original Spanish texts, among which may figure: Pardo Bazán, 'Los Pazos de Ulloa'; Valera, 'Pepita Jiménez'; Blasco Ibáñez, 'La barraca'; Delibes, 'Las ratas', Unamuno, 'San Manuel Bueno, mártir'.
