Information on Separate Entry for the BMus

As of  2010/11, the UCD School of Music will offer the Bachelor of Music (BMus) as a denominated entry (DN011). UCD’s BMus syllabus focuses on musicological and ethnomusicological topics, with a strong performance component attached (participation in UCD’s choirs and orchestra can earn the student credits, and in addition there is the option of a final-year recital).

Students interested in applying for the BMus denominated entry must take an entrance test, which will be given on Saturday, 6 March, from 1pm until 3pm in Theatre L, Newman Building, Belfield. The test will assess the students’ knowledge of music theory and music history, and will primarily consist of multiple choice questions. Two faculty members will be present to administer the test, talk about the BMus and answer any questions.

Applicants must also download and complete the questionnaire from the School of Music website (available from January 2010) and submit this on the 6th of March. This questionnaire will contain questions about the students’ musical experience, their current engagement with music, their motivation to focus on music at third level and their choice of university. Students will also be asked to write a brief (300-word) essay regarding their decision to study music at the university level.

Please note that if you are interested in studying music in UCD under the BA Arts Omnibus (DN012), it is not necessary to take the entrance exam.

Questions regarding the BMus, the entrance test, and/or the questionnaire should be addressed to Dr. Jaime Jones (jaime.jones@ucd.ie) or Dr. Wolfgang Marx (wolfgang.marx@ucd.ie).
